Grillz Buying Guide: Fit, Materials & Care Explained

Grillz are the most personal piece in hip-hop jewelry — they are literally made for your smile. But buying your first set raises real questions: custom or pre-made? Gold or iced? How many teeth? This guide answers all of it.
Custom vs Pre-Made: What Is the Difference?
Custom grillz (molded to your teeth)
True custom grillz are fabricated from a mold of your actual teeth. You take an impression with a mold kit, send it in, and the piece is built to snap onto your teeth with a precise, comfortable fit. Custom is the only way to get a set that feels natural enough to talk, smile, and wear for hours. Every custom grillz set at TabbyIced is made this way.
Pre-made / one-size grillz
Pre-made grillz use a flexible backing that adapts to your teeth. They are cheaper and ship fast, which makes them great for a first taste or a single event — but they will never fit as securely as a custom set.
Choosing Your Material
Solid gold
Solid gold grillz are the classic. A mirror-polish solid set — like our 2 PC Solid — gives that unmistakable rich gleam. Gold is also naturally kind to teeth: it is soft enough not to scratch enamel and will not irritate gums.
Diamond / iced grillz
For maximum shine, go iced. Hand-set VVS stones on a gold frame create a set that catches light with every word you say. Our Galaxy Set is a customer favorite for full-iced coverage. Iced sets cost more, but nothing else in jewelry gets noticed faster.
Silver
925 sterling silver is the smart budget pick. It looks sharp, takes stones well, and keeps the price down. Just know silver needs a bit more polishing to stay bright.
How Many Teeth? Top, Bottom, or Both?
- 6 teeth (canine to canine) — the classic starter set. Covers the visible smile zone.
- 8–10 teeth — fuller coverage, more presence, the most popular choice for iced sets.
- Top and bottom — the full-mouth look. Maximum impact, maximum price.
First-timers: start with a 6- or 8-tooth top set. You can always add the bottom later.
The Fit Process (Custom Orders)
Ordering custom grillz is simpler than most people expect:
- You receive a mold kit with putty and trays.
- Follow the instructions to take upper and lower impressions (takes about 10 minutes).
- Mail the molds back.
- Your grillz are handcrafted to fit those exact impressions.
Daily Care: Keep Them Shining
- Rinse after every wear and brush gently with a soft toothbrush — no toothpaste, which is abrasive.
- Store in the case, never loose in a pocket where stones can loosen.
- Take them out to eat and sleep. Food acids and grinding are the two fastest ways to dull a set.
- Deep-clean monthly with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap.
Gold Karats Explained (10K vs 14K vs 18K)
Grillz listings throw around karat numbers — here is what they mean for your mouth:
- 10K gold — the hardest and most affordable. Great for everyday wear; slightly paler color.
- 14K gold — the sweet spot. Rich color, good durability, the most popular choice for grillz.
- 18K gold — deepest color and softest. Luxurious but scratches easier, so it suits occasional wear better than daily.
Diamond Setting Styles
Not all iced grillz are set the same way. Pavé setting packs small stones edge-to-edge for maximum coverage — the classic flooded look. Prong setting holds each stone with tiny metal claws, letting more light in for extra fire but with slightly more metal visible. Honeycomb setting arranges stones in a hexagonal pattern that is both striking and structurally strong. Each gives a different character to the same smile.
Can You Eat and Talk With Grillz?
Talking: yes, once you adjust — most people speak normally within a day or two. Eating: technically possible with a perfect custom fit, but not recommended. Food acids dull the finish, hard foods can loosen stones, and chewing with grillz accelerates wear. Take them out for meals; your set will thank you.
How Long Do Grillz Last?
A well-made custom set lasts for years — often 3 to 5+ with normal care. What kills grillz early: sleeping in them (grinding loosens stones), never cleaning them (buildup dulls the finish permanently), and storing them loose. Treat them like the custom piece they are.
Ready for Your Set?
Whether you want your first solid gold set or a fully iced showpiece, start with the right fit and the right material — the shine takes care of itself.
